FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
ORIGINAL POSTERS, VINTAGE POSTERS & ANTIQUE POSTERS
When one refers to a vintage poster as an "original Poster", what does "original" mean?
Our Original Posters are from the first or "original" poster printing run, which means that if a poster has the date 1930 in the margin, that is the year it was actually printed.
Some poster dealers seem to concentrate on French posters only - does Murray Galleries have posters from other countries?
Absolutely! Our inventory is quite diverse along national lines - we carry French posters, Belgian posters, Italian posters, Polish Posters and Pan-American Posters. Also of note is that some artists, like Leonetto Cappiello (who was Italian), produced posters mostly for French companies.
How varied is Murray Galleries' inventory?
Our Inventory of Vintage Posters is enormous! Leonetto Cappiello alone has produced over 3,000 different lithographs over his distinguished career, and we have many representations of his work in stock. While Leonetto Cappiello is one of the most well known of the genres artists, we also stock works by some of history's greatest masters - In our inventory at this time is works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Cheret and Alphonse Mucha. Additonally, we have a beautiful selection of art prints and art posters, as well as posters from almost any special category imaginable: movie posters, circus posters, vintage advertisements - this list goes on!
Why are the vintage posters and antique posters in the Murray Galleries inventory in such good condition?
Posters have been collectibles since they were introduced in Europe in the 1890's. Many of them were never posted for several reasons; a new poster was issued for the product; the printer purposely printed an overrun to sell through a print dealer; or the vintage poster was part of an older collection. On Occasion, we buy vintage or antique posters that have to be restored. That process is done by a person that specializes in paper restoration and the poster is restored to nothing less than museum standards.
Do vintage posters increase in value?
Vintage posters have been collected and offered at auction for many years. The recent increase in the visibility of vintage posters has driven demand to the highest levels ever. Some vintage posters have tripled in value in the last several years.
How do I know I am buying an original poster?
As with any other product or service, the vendor you choose to purchase original posters from is very important. Education about the artwork should be available as well as some guarantee from the gallery as to authenticity and origin. Since these pieces were not originally produced as fine art, there were no certificates or numbering system used for identification.
How are vintage posters usually displayed?
Vintage posters are usually framed and hang just like a painting or any other printed wall art. In many instances the vintage posters backing is trimmed to about .25" of the original poster paper and it is then attached to a piece of acid-free foam core board using linen tape as a hinge. The mounted poster can then be framed using a moulding of your choice. We recommend the use of plexiglas to reduce weight and the chance of damage due to breakage. Optional UV treated plexiglas can be used to reduce damage from sunlight. Murray Galleries has framed hundreds if not thousands of vintage posters for its customers - an example of well-framed vintage posters can be found on our framing page.
